Our research on duty schedule involves three aspects.
Multi-objective problem: As the duty scheduling problem at hospitals is associated with complex environment, it is often necessary to consider the task as multiple objectives simultaneously. This type of problem is also know as a multi-objective optimization problem. In the context of duty scheduling problem, these objectives might include factors such as work load balance, regulatory compliances, employee satisfaction, etc., Hence, we define the problem of duty scheduling at University Hospital as Multi-objective duty scheduling problem.
Mixed-Integer programming: Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is a powerful mathematical optimization technique that can be applied to solve complex multi-objective duty scheduling problems. In MILP, the objective is to find the values of decision variables that minimize or maximize a linear objective function while satisfying a set of constraints. The decision variables might represent assignments of duties to employees, shifts, vacations, or day offs. The objectives and constraints are typically formulated based on the specific requirements of the scheduling problem. It's important to note that formulating a MILP model for a multi-objective duty scheduling requires a deep understanding of the problem's intricacies, as well as careful consideration of the objectives and constraints. The complexity of the problem can vary greatly based on factors like the number of employees, shifts and the regulatory aspects of the scheduling requirements.
Artificial Intelligence: Currently duty schedules are generated using MILP. Due to its efficiency and sucess, Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches are under consideration for handling uncertainty, complexity and various objectives. These approaches can be especially used in predicting employees preferences, demand patterns or generating optimal schedule based on historical data.
